iSimulate Device and Support Information

Summary

iSimulate is a self-contained system. The RCTC IT department has set it up to keep itself up to date and be easy to use both on and off campus. This document describes the roles and responsibilities for supporting this system, how to set up this device for on or off-campus use, and how to maintain it properly.

Device Connection Options

The iSimulate iPads need a network connection to connect to each other to run simulations. There are two methods of connecting the devices.

On-Campus Configuration

The iSimulate iPads are set up on the RCTC campus Wi-Fi. The RCTC campus Wi-Fi is the recommended network to use for the iSimulate system. All four of the iSimulate iPads are set up to connect automatically to the RCTC campus Wi-Fi when they are within range of it. While on the RCTC campus, only use the RCTC campus Wi-Fi to connect the iSimulate iPads.

Off-Campus Configuration

Each iSimulate kit comes with a 2.4 GHz wireless router to allow the kit to work in remote training locations. These mobile wireless routers should only be used when using the iSimulate system off-campus. If these devices are used on-campus the wireless signals the mobile wireless routers create will make it very hard for faculty, students, staff, and visitors in the area to access the RCTC campus Wi-Fi. The two iPads in each iSimulate kit are set up to connect automatically to the mobile wireless router contained in their respective kits.

Enable Mobile Wireless Router Connection

To turn on the mobile wireless routers and allow the iPads to connect to each other off-campus follow these instructions:

  1. Connect the loose 90-degree USB-C cable to the USB-C port on the bottom of the wireless router.
  2. Ensure that the USB-C cable, now connected to the wireless router, is connected to the Anker brand power bank or the plugged-in power distribution hub.
  3. The router will turn on in 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. The kit's iPads will automatically connect to the wireless routers once they have finished turning on.

Disable Mobile Wireless Router Connection

When returning the iSimulate devices from off-campus use, make sure to turn off the mobile wireless routers by following these instructions:

  1. Disconnect the 90-degree USB-C cable from the USB-C port on the bottom of the wireless router.
  2. The kit's iPads will automatically connect to the RCTC campus Wi-Fi when they are on campus.

Troubleshooting

If the iPads do not automatically connect to the wireless router:

  • Check that the wireless router is powered on by looking to see a pulsing blue light on the top of the router.
    • If there is no LED check that the power cord is seated correctly in the wireless router and the power source it is connected to.
    • Make sure the power bank has at least a partial charge.
    • Or, if the USB-C cable for the mobile wireless router is connected to the power distribution hub, the hub is plugged into an outlet with power.
  • Check the iPad's Wi-Fi settings to see if an iSimulate Black or iSimulate Blue network is available.
    • If the iSimulate Black or iSimulate Blue networks are available, attempt to connect to the network with the same color name as the iSimulate iPad.
    • If the iSimulate Black or iSimulate Blue networks are not available and all previous checks have been completed contact iSimulate support

Device Charging & Cable Connections

There are some conditions to be aware of about the power and charging cables for the iSimulate devices:

  • The power distribution hub gets hot while connected to power. Ensure that while the power distribution hub is connected to power, the iSimulate kits are not left in their carrying bag and that the back opening for the hard shell case is opened to allow passive heat dissipation to keep the devices from overheating.
  • The Anker brand power bank is connected to the power distribution hub to charge when the power distribution hub is plugged in.
  • The Anker brand power bank can be connected to either the mobile wireless router or the iPad Pro. The cables can be connected as necessary for on-campus or off-campus training to allow the iPad Pro to maintain its battery and the mobile wireless router to run.
  • The power distribution hub has one spare USB-C port that could be used to allow all of the devices to be plugged in and charged while within the iSimulate kit. To do this connect the lightning charging cord from the device carrying bag to the last USB-C port on the power distribution hub. This lighting charging cord can now be used to charge the monitor iPad.

Device Maintenance

The iSimulate devices are set up to need as little maintenance as possible.

Device Updates

All operating system and application updates are handled automatically by the remote device management setup and run by the RCTC IT department. If there are any concerns or questions about the device operating system or application updates please contact the RCTC IT department for support by creating a ticket at https://services.rctc.edu.

Device Replacement

Most technology equipment owned and used by RCTC is set on a routine replacement schedule. These iSimulate devices are NOT on this schedule. The replacement, update, or upgrading of these devices will need to be managed by the department that owns them: the RCTC Nursing Department.
